Laughter Yoga is the latest health craze sweeping the globe where anyone can laugh without any reason. It has been a life changing experience for millions including me and my wife.
The Laughter Clubs Movement started with just five persons in a Mumbai park in the year 1995. At the outset, it was envisaged to combine laughter exercises based on yogic breathing and stretching techniques to provide the benefits of laughter to people in a structured way. But soon after, a whole new significance of laughter was discovered.
According to Dr Madan Kataria, the Founder of Laughter Clubs Movement, “We realized that laughter is not about amusement and entertainment, giggling or chuckling; instead it has a great deal to do with our inner self – it has to come from deep within, straight from the soul, and one can experience this laughter from the soul only when the heart is pure, full of love, compassion and kindness.
“Laughter becomes more meaningful when it is intended not only to make ourselves happy but also to make others happy. This in Laughter Clubs is known as the Inner Spirit of Laughter.”
Laughter Clubs are instrumental in bringing about attitudinal changes in people and provide an ideal platform to help people connect through love and laughter. During the course of my journey of Laughter Yoga, I have seen a lady who was always full of anger become a warm, jovial person; I have been a witness to an introvert converting to a full fledged extrovert and a quarrelsome person change to a caring and sharing one.
Laughter Yoga goes beyond just the physical and physiological dimension of laughing. It not only fosters a feeling of physical well being by generating endorphins in the body, it also enhances the spirit and touches the emotional core. It cultivates positive thinking and promotes understanding.
Many of the laughter exercises focus on forgiveness, appreciation, anger management, gratitude and helpfulness. Laughter Yoga provides an opportunity to the practitioners to actively enhance the life of others.
Those who practice Laughter Yoga on a regular basis understand that it has the power to change the selfish state of mind to an altruistic state of mind. It has been proven that people who laugh are likely to be more generous and have more empathy than those who don’t laugh.
This inner spirit of laughter becomes apparent to the seekers as they develop a state of internal peace – the worries and intense goals that have driven their lives become less important. These people become aware that true happiness comes from giving unconditional love, caring for others and sharing with each other.
Laughter Yoga inspires members to make the world a better place not only for themselves but for everyone. Dr Kataria goes beyond this in his book ‘Laugh for no reason’ to say that the ultimate objective of Laughter Yoga is to spread good health, joy and achieve world peace through laughter.
