☆ SHINRIN-YOKU: FOREST BATHING

HOW TREES CAN HELP YOU FIND HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

Video Link : SHINRIN-YOKU: FOREST BATHING

Spending mindful, intentional time around trees – what the Japanese call shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing – can promote health and happiness.

Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, can reduce your stress levels and blood pressure, strengthen your immune and cardiovascular systems, boost your energy, mood, creativity, and concentration, and even help you lose weight and live longer.

We all know how good being in nature can make us feel.

The sounds of the forest, the scent of the trees, the sunlight playing through the leaves, the fresh, clean air – these things give us a sense of comfort.

Being in nature can restore our mood, give us back our energy and vitality, refresh and rejuvenate us.

‘Shinrin’ in Japanese means ‘forest’ and ‘yoku’ means ‘bath’.

So shinrin-yoku means bathing in the forest atmosphere, or taking in the forest through our senses.

Shinrin-yoku is not exercise, or hiking, or jogging.

It is simply being in nature, connecting with it through our sense of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch.

We are part of the natural world. Our rhythms are the rhythms of nature.

As we walk slowly through the forest, seeing, listening, smelling, tasting and touching, we bring our rhythms into step with nature.

Shinrin-yoku is like a bridge. By opening our senses, it bridges the gap between us and the natural world.

When we are in harmony with the natural world we can begin to heal.

Our nervous system can reset itself, our bodies and minds can go back to how they ought to be.

We may not travel very far on our forest walk but, in connecting us with nature, shinrin-yoku takes us all the way home to our true selves.

Even a small amount of time in nature can have an impact on our health.

A two-hour forest bath will help you to unplug from technology and slow down.

It will bring you into the present moment and de-stress and relax you.

Shinrin-yoku can:

  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Lower stress
  • Improve cardiovascular and metabolic health
  • Lower blood sugar levels

When people started to practise shinrin-yoku, in the early 1980s, it was based only on common sense and the intuitive idea that being in the beautiful green forests of Japan would be good for us. Until recently, however, there was little scientific evidence to support what we have always known innately about the healing power of the forest.

It has been now scientifically proven that shinrin-yoku can:

  •  Boost the immune system
  •  Increase energy
  • Decrease anxiety, depression and anger
  • Reduce stress and bring about a state of relaxation
  • The World Health Organization calls stress the health epidemic of the twenty-first century. And finding ways to manage stress – not just for our own health but for the health of our communities, at home and in the workplace – is the most significant health challenge of the future.

Studies have now proved that forest bathing:

  • Lowers the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline
  • Suppresses the sympathetic or ‘fight or flight’ system
  • Enhances the parasympathetic or ‘rest and recover’ system
  • Lowers blood pressure and increases heart-rate variability Numerous studies have been conducted and a huge mass of data collected from hundreds of people on the impact of forest-bathing on various aspects of human health.
  • Forest-bathing can help you sleep
  • Forest-bathing can improve your mood
  • Forest-bathing boosts the immune system

☆ Positive Education: A Revolution in World Education

Positive education is the combination of traditional education with the study of happiness and well-being.

Video Link : Positive Education: A Revolution in World Education

Every parent wants the best for their children, they want their child to be happy and flourish.

However, finding the right education for their child can be a challenge.

Positive education emphasises the importance of training the heart as well as the mind in education.

Positive Education curriculum has been implemented with good results in schools in Australia, USA and Germany.

Be the first one to start this initiative at your school in India!

Well-being should be taught in school on three grounds:

  • As an antidote to depression
  • As a vehicle for increasing life satisfaction
  • And as an aid to better learning and more creative thinking.

“All young people need to learn workplace skills, which has been the subject matter of the education system in place for two hundred years. In addition, we can now teach the skills of well-being – of how to have more positive emotion, more meaning, better relationships, and more positive accomplishment. Schools at every level should teach these skills”.

Martin Seligman Founder, Positive Psychology “Positive Education is preparing students for the tests of life, not just a life of tests. All schools can and should be 21st century schools”.

Anthony Seldon “Positive education is based on the science of well-being and happiness.“

Positive Education is –

  • an approach to education that blends academic learning with character & well-being.
  • preparing students with life skills such as: grit, optimism, resilience, growth mindset, engagement, and mindfulness amongst others.

“Widespread support is necessary for the success of the positive education movement.“

“Positive education views school as a place where students not only cultivate their intellectual minds, but also develop a broad set of character strengths, virtues, and competencies, which together support their well-being”.

“In consultation with world experts in positive psychology, the Geelong Grammar School developed its

‘Model for Positive Education’ to complement traditional learning – an applied framework comprising six domains: Positive Relationships, Positive Emotions, Positive Health, Positive Engagement, Positive Accomplishment, and Positive Purpose.

“Positive education is a whole-school approach to student and staff well-being: it brings together the science of positive psychology with best-practice teaching, encouraging and supporting individuals and communities to flourish.”

☆ How to be Healthy, Happy and Wise

A Pathway to Authentic Happiness, Well-being and a Meaningful Life

Happiness, say the positive psychologists, is the experience of joy, contentment, or positive well-being, combined with a sense that life is good, meaningful, and worthwhile.

Twenty-three hundred years ago, Aristotle concluded that, more than anything else, men and women seek happiness. It is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence. Different men seek after happiness in different ways and by different means, and so make for themselves different modes of life.

What is the pathway to authentic happiness, well-being and a meaningful life? How can we equip ourselves with sustainable scientific tools to cultivate a happy and fulfilling life with a greater sense of well-being? This article attempts to answer these questions.

Taking care of body, mind and spirit is of utmost importance. It’s like a tripod. All limbs must be equally strong for balance and harmony. We need to transform the entire experience of life by taking care of all the relevant dimensions – physiological, psychological and spiritual.

After years of deep study and practical sessions with people from all walks of life, a holistic approach has emerged that blends carefully the best of positive psychology, meditation, yoga, laughter yoga, and spirituality.
Positive psychology is the science of happiness. It provides authentic understanding of happiness and well-being and dispels myths and wrong notions about happiness. It is a treasure trove of evidence-based happiness-increasing strategies from which one may choose activities suitable for oneself.

Meditation is an invaluable tool for calming, concentration and purification of the mind. It clears clouds and lets you seek wisdom. According to Matthieu Ricard, happiest monk on this planet, “Meditation is a practice that makes it possible to cultivate and develop certain basic positive human qualities in the same way as other forms of training make it possible to play a musical instrument or acquire any other skill.”

Yoga can do wonders for your health by stimulating endocrinal systems and taking care of neuro-muscular systems. It is suitable for modern day lifestyle diseases and brings about body-mind union. If you don’t have enough time, even then surya namaskara can be easily integrated into your daily life as it requires only five to fifteen minutes’ practice daily to obtain beneficial results remarkably quickly.

Laughter yoga combines laughter exercises with yogic breathing. It is instrumental in oxygenation of the body, strengthening immune system, and stress relief as feel good hormones known as endorphins are generated during the process. Just ten minutes of gentle laughter in the morning can change the complexion of your day.

Spirituality provides right view and right understanding of life. It gives spiritual insight into right speech, right action and right livelihood. Inner wisdom steers us in the right direction. If you desire everlasting health and happiness, cultivate wisdom.

All the five components – positive psychology, meditation, yoga, laughter yoga and spirituality – put together, enable complete transformation of the entire experience of life.

The benefits include health, happiness and peace for individuals; stress relief, team building, higher productivity, leadership and positivity at workplaces; health, bonding and integration in communities; and creativity, better concentration, emotional intelligence, spiritual growth, strong immune system and all-round personality development of youngsters.

In conclusion, may we say that the practice of yoga, meditation and laughter yoga along with fundamental understanding of positive psychology and spirituality can lead you to lasting happiness and peace.

☆ Laughter Meditation for Beginners

Let us begin by watching this video:

HOW to do LAUGHTER MEDITATION

Laughter Meditation

Have you ever had the experience of laughter meditation?

It is one of the most intense and beautiful experiences that you can ever have. But you have to experience it yourself. It is a mystery. It cannot be told in words by anyone to you.

When you laugh, you forget the past. You can’t bother about the future. And, you are oblivious of the surroundings. Laughter starts to flow like a fountain. There is no laugher, it’s only laughter. The laugher mingles with laughter and they become one. It is something Divine. It is pure and pristine bliss. The mind becomes serene and radiant like the full moon.

I have got my deepest fulfilment while conducting laughter meditation. The participants feel cathartic and fully liberated. All the pain and agony has gone. It feels so good and light. There is no trace of physical, mental or emotional stress anywhere near. Every molecule of the universe is tranquil. All the blockages are cleared. Consciousness flows happily and freely. You become a part of the joyous cosmic dance. A Sufi inside you starts singing the most enchanting melodies.

Laughter opens a beautiful door to transcendence.
Laughter meditation is a state of no mind. Complete mindlessness. But it is total existence. You have a feel of totality for the first time. It is a paradise that you can create on your own. Anytime, anywhere.

According to Dr Madan Kataria, the founder of laughter yoga, “Laughter meditation is the purest kind of laughter and a very cathartic experience that opens up the layers of your subconscious mind and you will experience laughter from deep within.”

In some of the Zen monasteries, every monk has to start his morning with laughter, and has to end his night with laughter – the first and the last thing every day. Says Osho, “If you become silent after your laughter, one day you will feel God also laughing, you will hear the whole existence laughing – trees and stones and stars with you!”

I recommend laughter meditation for all those who face a lot of stress at the workplace. It is also beneficial for students and homemakers.

योग-साधना LifeSkills/जीवन कौशल ☆ Silent Laughter ☆ Shri Jagat Singh Bisht

Shri Jagat Singh Bisht

(Master Teacher: Happiness & Well-Being, Laughter Yoga Master Trainer,  Author, Blogger, Educator and Speaker.)

☆ Silent Laughter

Let us first watch this video on Silent Laughter:   SILENCE! LAUGHTER SESSION IS ON

Hope, you enjoyed watching it.

Silent Laughter is a powerful cardio-vascular exercise that relieves stress instantly, boosts immune system and produces feel good hormones known as endorphins. It is cathartic, massages internal organs and induces deep breathing from the diaphragm.

Silent Laughter is a laughter exercise where we laugh silently without making any sound. The laughter is vigorous but there is no sound. You may use facial expressions and hand gestures to articulate your laughter. It’s more fun than other laughter exercises because the more you try to supress the sound of laughter, the more difficult and hilarious it becomes until everyone burst out laughing loud.

It’s a powerful cardio-vascular exercise, alleviates stress and induces deep breathing from the diaphragm. Silent laughter is cathartic and boosts our immune system. It produces copious amounts of feel good hormones known as endorphins. Gentle laughter massages all our internal organs thoroughly.

First of all, one needs to cultivate childlike playfulness and get prepared to laugh for no reason. Then, the laughter needs to be sustained for 5-10 minutes before going into Laughter Meditation. You become quieter and relax – laughing less and less outwardly but more and more of your laughter is inwardly.

(We are grateful to Yogacharya Subhash Kalambe ji who gave us permission to publish the very useful article “Health: an asset to mankind” on the occasion of International Yoga DayYogacharya Subhash Kalambe ji is an author of the book “Yoga Sadhana and Exercise”.  Presently, he is providing Yoga Training in his ॐ  Saibag Yoga Ashram, Pune.)

☆ HEALTH: AN ASSET TO MANKIND ☆

In present day scenario, it is great achievement of life, if one remains healthy and physically fit throughout his life. If one succeeds in achieving this then certainly it is a blessing in disguise. The present day attitude of leading a luxurious style is in a way inviting more and more trouble.

What is health? “Health is nothing but a psycho-physical balance of the human personality.” A sound mind can command a sound body and a sound body responds to a sound mind. In the simplest term, a sound health denotes that when the demands arise all the body systems and organs should co-ordinate with each other to function with vigour & vitality. However, by any reason, if the psycho-physical balance becomes unstable, it leads to life threatening health maladies that will put human personality under the danger zone.

Unstable psycho-physical balance may lead to anatomical, physiological and mental ailments/disorders like heart disease, asthma, diabetes, kidney failure, indigestion, constipation, cancer, arthritis, spondylosis, obesity, physical/mental stress, high/low blood pressure, mental depression and insomnia etc. In other words these ailments/disorders are the gift of a modern luxurious life style. The psycho-physical imbalance directly affects the total human personality, which ultimately leads to mental depression at the very first instance.

Remember mental peace cannot be bought in the market. It can be achieved only through modifying our luxurious life style and by adopting a positive approach towards life. Optimism is the best solution rather than blindly following pessimism to maintain mental peace. When nature closes one door, the other door is always kept open provided you are diligent enough to recognize it. To keep up psycho-physical balance in tuned conditions just remember these simple facts of healthy living:

EAT TO LIVE, NOT LIVE TO EAT

LIVE HEALTHY AND DIE HEALTHY

A person looses the essence of healthy living by always being in the pursuit of asset. Man has an insatiable urge to earn more and more money in order to enjoy luxurious life style. This attitude leads to the neglect of the individual’s health and fitness state, diet, socialization, mental peace, etc. Psycho-physical balance should be a prime concern in everyone’s life. To maintain our health we should not rely on somebody. If every individual is healthy, the society & nation too becomes healthy.  A healthy nation can survive the natural calamities with a strong willpower. More-over to keep ones mental peace we should bear in mind a few golden rules. One should learn to love others unconditionally, which is the essence of fruitful life. Don’t be jealous of others. Don’t give any space in your mind for enmity and hatred. Enjoy the happiness by sharing others happiness. If possible extend a timely helping hand provided it is need based. This will give you an additional mental satisfaction. If one cannot do well to others, we can stop ourselves from doing bad. If assistance cannot be provided, do not create hurdles. Have a positive approach in day-to-day dealing.

Moreover, hoarding movable/immovable property/asset more than your requirement causes more of anxiety and stress rather than peace. Be patient in your day-to-day life. Do not worry about the past or the future, live in the present. However, in search of mental solace / mind purification people follow the path of spirituality, religion, mythology, satsang etc. All these activities really play wonderful role in life provided human ego is surrendered at any cost. Following mythological approach blindly without knowing the facts of life will do more harm than good to the individual. To achieve the highest goal in once life is a wonderful aspect, provided individual capability and aptitude is so suited. As long as aims and objectives of life are concerned, invariably have the options, because there is no limit to human desires. Failing to achieve the desire aims and objective in life without having many options may lead to psycho-somatic disorders and directly affect the health. On the whole, leading a healthy life style should be imbibed and nurtured in our heart from the childhood itself along with cultural heritage. Keep your body and mind occupied by doing something positive, constructive and useful. Also, to keep up a sound mind in a sound body & a vice-a-versa incorporate in your daily routing some sort of aerobic exercises, yoga, meditation and a regime of healthy nutritious diet according to individual calorie requirement. To sort out or prevent most of the health problems take proper rest during working hours and have a sound sleep at night for at least 7/8 hours daily. Doing aerobic exercises in the form of brisk walk, jogging, cycling, swimming, etc. for 30 minutes, 5 times a week while maintaining target heart rate will do wonders to your health. Hence plan your day accordingly to avoid any mishaps. Similarly it is worth remembering the statement:

शरीरमाद्यम खलुधर्मसाधनम

To follow the path of religion faithfully your body and mind should be sound enough. Whatever the mind thinks that reflects in the body. Therefore to maintain mental state, meditation plays a vital role in human life. Meditation in the simplest term means, “CONTINUOUS THINKING OF SOMETHING MENTALLY”. In the day-to-day life, make your body and mind to perform the task at hand with perfection by putting your heart and soul into it, so as to reduce additional, physical and mental stress. Try to attempt one work at a time. Too much of a sedentary life style like watching TV, gossiping, browsing on the internet, oversleeping, smoking, tobacco chewing, over-eating, etc. reduces the lifeline.

Therefore in a nutshell, here are a few tips on how to stay young and healthy to maintain psycho-physical balance to achieve sound health:

1)   Laugh and be humorous, don’t be gloomy.

2)   Let bygones be bygones. Dwelling on the past inflicts unnecessary stress.

3)  Early to bed, early to rise, is healthy and nice.

4)  Stay lean; being just 30% over-weight is bad.

5)  Keep learning, reading and socializing. An alert and active mind keeps the brain cells healthy.

6)   Keep working, doing something you like. Don’t retire; it slows down your body.

7)  Be the boss of your own life. Letting others push you around produces stress.

8)  Too many pills ruin your body. Take just what you need.

9)  Constantly alternating between the weight gain and loss is bad.

10) Exercise, give up smoking and eat less fatty food.

11) Do not worry about health and death, just get on with your life and enjoy it.

Last but not the least –

‘Always remember’

‘Health is an asset, learn to treasure it’.
