☆ Hypocrisy* ☆

Surrounded by the

crowd of masks

I’m perplexingly

standing as a question,

Will I ever reach or not

the real face…

Under the mask of friendship,

hiding the impious enmity…

Under the garb of cordiality

soaring with rancour,

Under  the elixir of words

hiding the vicious poison,

Why does human,

fueled by jealousy,

don the masks?

Keeps the split personalities…

The time he spends in

creating and wearing masks,

That many moments of life

he loses in vain,

Wickedness in every breath

pollutes the very existence…

Friends! Keep the life

pure as Ganges water,

What is there in the hypocrisy…?

English Literature – Poetry – ☆ In an attempt to scare away the vulture… ☆ Captain Pravin Raghuvanshi, NM

We present an English Version of Shri Sanjay Bhardwaj’s Hindi Article “गिद्ध को उड़ाने की कोशिश में” published in today’s edition as   संजय उवाच – गिद्ध को उड़ाने की कोशिश में  We extend our heartiest thanks to Captain Pravin Raghuvanshi Ji for this beautiful translation.)

☆ In an attempt to scare away the vulture…☆

The characters of the stories are often found amidst us only, in our surroundings.  If one examines the characters, the concerned litterateur/writer will mention that this character lived in his/ her locality or a friend of his/ her mentioned about such and such characters, that is to say, the characters of the stories shape up on paper from the real life.  The characters connect with the reader’s compassion and senses.  ‘Ah’ and ‘wow’ factors, on the events of the character’s life, become an overwhelming medium of expression of the readers.

The anomaly is that the person who is empathizing with the character of the story, or living the compassion, refuses to interfere with the plight of the characters in real life, saying that: this is a personal matter of the concerned character.

It is only natural to recall talented but unfortunate photographer ‘Kevin Carter’ in this context.  Kevin went on to cover a ‘story’ (!) of starvation in Sudan in 1993.  He took a photo of a vulture sitting behind a starving baby girl, waiting for her to die.  This picture caught the attention of the world towards Sudan.  Kevin also received a Pulitzer Prize for this photo.  Later on during a TV show, when Kevin was talking about the vulture, a viewer’s comment shook him from within, who retorted rather agonizingly, “There were two vultures there that day.  The other had a camera in his hand.”

Due to the guilt, Kevin is believed to have gone into depression later.  He committed suicide year later.  However, in a letter written before his suicide, Kevin had mentioned that it was due to this photo that Sudan received massive support from the United Nations.

Myriad aspects of this unfortunate story can be discussed, endlessly. There can be consensus or disagreement, but it cannot be denied that before being litterateurs, journalists or photo-journalists, we are human-being first. If the humanity remains, then only will the concerns related to humans shall remain.  Also, one aspect of the timeless truth is that there is a vulture within all of us. May be, we cannot to exterminate that vulture in us, but at least, we can try to scare it away!

(इस रविवार को कैप्टेन प्रवीण रघुवंशी जी द्वारा सुप्रसिद्ध कवि लार्ड बायरन की कविता  “She walks in beauty” का हिंदी अनुवाद अवश्य पढ़ें।)

☆ Shrishta – The Creator ☆

“Guru ji, I am in a strange state of dilemma. Everyone has started to appear as Digambar**।  Everyone is in his natural state. There is no covering of any kind”, the seeker posed his problem and curiosity together to the Guru.
“When could anyone,  who remained in the wordly vesture, ever see Hari — the Lord? Now, look at the uncovered Nature like mother beholds her child. You also cast your eyes with loving adoration… You have now begun to see the subtle in the gross… You’re on the earnest path of becoming the creator from the creation”,  saying thus, Guruji embraced the disciple.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»
**The word  *Digambara* is a combination of two Sanskrit words: dik (दिक्) (directions) and ambara (अम्बर) (sky), referring to those whose garments are of the element that fills the four quarters of space. Digambara monks do not wear any clothes as it is considered to be parigraha (possession), which ultimately leads to attachment.

☆ Weekly column  Poetic World of Ms. Neelam Saxena Chandra # 15

☆ Change ☆

Things don’t really change.

The nature is perpetual and complete-

If one bird or animal dies,

Another is born;

In totality,

Things don’t really change.

Certain flowers bloom

In a particular season,

When you cross the clock of time,

And touch the base again,

They shall blossom once more.

Things don’t really change.

The rivers keep flowing

Year after year

And if you touch the shore of Ganga

At a particular spot

Again, after decades,

You will find the same

Turbulence or calm,

Things don’t really change.

The human nature

Is also steady.

Rarely do you see an arrogant person

Turn humble,

Or a crooked mindset

Change into noble.

Things don’t really change.

Or at least, it appears,

That things don’t change.

If you want change,

You have to be the agent of change;

You can really do wonders!

☆ Calmness and Strength ☆

When the stream falls down

From the slope of the mountains,

And flows in the plains with pain,

It maintains its calm

Despite the turbulence of abandonment.

The breeze, after the cyclone,

Learns to gain back its gentleness,

And silent becomes its tone;

The world gathers courage from its repose,

Reclaiming its energy.

The tree, after being wrapped in snow for long,

Removes the frostiness from its mind

And slowly its leaves grow back again;

The world watches in awe its colourfulness

As it waves its branches full of bloom!

O Lord!

Let me be the calmness of that river,

Let me be the gentleness of that breeze

And let me be the strength of that tree!

☆ Autumn and Winter ☆

The absent autumn

Peeps in for a little while,

Vanishing again.

You are used to its vanishing tricks,

You are also used to its appearing all of a sudden,

And for the first time,

You don’t get swayed by its arrival,

Your emotions don’t start pirouetting,

And poetry doesn’t pour like rains.

You’ve rather started loving

The icy winter.

It does freeze you for a while,

But it’s more realistic

And then, it always lives up to its promises

Of nothingness.

When the autumn bids adieu

After its short trip,

You are rather happy,

Since there is no ripple to disturb you

In the sea of your peace.

☆ Criterion ☆

On white canvas

myriad hues get dispersed

With  colorimetry

canvas becomes fertile,

Masses rush to pour

accolades for the creation…

White saree

accidentally gets stained

with single drop of color,

As the border flutters a little

there is a huge outcry,

Masses reach again

to oppress and suffocate her…

Kalamkar —the writer,

dreams and wishes,

If he could erect the frame

with white saree

and clothe her with

the canvas!

☆ Weekly column  Poetic World of Ms. Neelam Saxena Chandra # 12

☆ As frozen as ice ☆

Sometimes,

The going gets tough,

Your soft feet get brutally exposed

To the harshness of the tarry roads,

The mighty sun of fate becomes fiercer

Charring your parched skin,

Thorns prick your naked feet

And grief pricks the corners of your red eyes,

You run madly

In the rough deserts of your broken heart,

And solace eludes you.

During such times,

You think

That you are as frozen as ice.

But if you do walk

Those rough terrains once,

You become flowing water

That knows how to carve its own path,

And no future journey is hard enough.
