We present an English Version of Shri Sanjay Bhardwaj’s Hindi short story “सोंध”. We extend our heartiest thanks to the learned author Captain Pravin Raghuvanshi Ji (who is very well conversant with Hindi, Sanskrit, English and Urdu languages) for this beautiful translation and his artwork.)

‘Insense – Perfumers Global Exhibition’.. It was the world’s largest exhibition of perfumers. Thousands of shops in lakhs of square feet of ground, were stamping their proud presence.
Hundreds of bottles of perfume in every store were adorning them. Different sparkle of each bottle, different fragrance of each perfume. Perfume, and more perfume everywhere. All one could see was the stacks of intoxicating perfumes.
As expected, the crowd at the exhibition had gone berserk. People were thronging on shops, with the inebriation of perfumes. It was hard to decide which perfume smelled the best.
Then suddenly, not knowing from where the stream of clouds came, overcasting the sky. With lightening and thundering, thick drops started drenching the ground. The whole atmosphere started to smell with petrichor, due to the union of earth and sky.
The fragrancy of all the perfumes of the world was now losing its charm. The fragrance of earthy petrichor emanating from the soil had encapsulated the entire universe, overshadowing the celestial smell of all the perfumes, collectively…!
