☆ Travelogue – New Zealand: A Journey Through Aotearoa: Memoirs of New Zealand: # 7 ☆ Mr. Jagat Singh Bisht ☆
My love affair with the Land of the Long White Cloud, Aotearoa – New Zealand – began a few years ago, and my fondness for this enchanting country has only grown with time. This travelogue captures glimpses from our first unforgettable adventure in Kiwi Land.
Having previously explored destinations like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Thailand, and Malaysia during brief holidays, we yearned for a long, leisurely escape. That wish materialized when Anurag sent us tickets to Auckland. The flight with Air New Zealand was seamless, and we were greeted warmly by Sneha and Anurag at the Auckland International Airport. Their cozy home at North Shore became our haven during the trip.
Settling into the Kiwi Rhythm:
Jet lag was surprisingly absent, and the next morning started with chai. While Sneha and Radhika visited the Countdown supermarket, Anurag and I spent time catching up as he washed his bike. In the evening, a long, circular walk from Birkdale to Beach Haven set the tone for our stay – a mix of exploration, nature, and bonding.
Queenstown: Adventure in Paradise:
A flight to Queenstown in the South Island unveiled a world of alpine beauty. Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by dramatic ranges, the town captivated us. Highlights included savoring the iconic Fergburger, exploring serene walking trails, and enjoying panoramic views from Bob’s Peak via a gondola ride. A coach trip to Milford Sound was the pinnacle of our journey, with its awe-inspiring cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and Kipling-worthy vistas.
Cricket, Beaches, and Regional Parks:
The thrill of watching a T20 cricket match between Pakistan and New Zealand at close quarters was an unforgettable experience. Weekend drives to the Coromandel Peninsula revealed golden beaches and lush rainforests, while evenings at Shakespear Regional Park were filled with laughter and tranquility.
Volunteering and Spiritual Connection:
Volunteering at Dhamma Medini, a Vipassana meditation center in Kaukapakapa, added depth to the trip. Surrounded by a picturesque valley, my days were spent gardening, maintaining the premises, and meditating. A laughter yoga session with dhamma servers from across the globe brought smiles and joy.
Rotorua: A Geothermal Wonderland:
Rotorua’s unique geothermal activity gave it an otherworldly charm. From the vibrantly colored Champagne Pool to a Maori cultural show complete with Haka dance and traditional dinner, every moment in this lakeside city was extraordinary.
Daily Adventures and Laughter Clubs:
Daily walks through Kauri parks and along the coast became cherished routines. A newfound yoga spot by the sea at Beach Haven Wharf was Radhika’s sanctuary. Meanwhile, the laughter yoga community welcomed us warmly, sharing their practices and camaraderie during gatherings arranged by Louise Stevens.
Exploring Auckland’s Gems:
Auckland’s vibrant mix of attractions kept us enthralled – from the War Memorial Museum and Botanic Gardens to a walk from Britomart to Mission Bay Beach. Watching the sunrise from Mount Eden and sunset from Devonport provided bookends to days filled with exploration.
Culinary Delights and Cultural Etiquette:
From Thai and Mediterranean cuisine to indulgent chocolates, ice cream, and Manuka honey, our taste buds were in for a treat. Two simple yet powerful words, “kia ora,” epitomized the Kiwi spirit of warmth and respect.
Reflections on Aotearoa:
As we boarded our flight home, one thought lingered: if citizens everywhere followed rules and embraced kindness as the Kiwis do, every country could be as peaceful as New Zealand. This journey was more than a trip; it was an immersion into a way of life that left us inspired and longing to return.
