☆ Travelogue – New Zealand: A Land of Curiosities: Wildlife Wonders in Aotearoa: # 9 ☆ Mr. Jagat Singh Bisht ☆
Did you know that in the enchanting realm of New Zealand, there slither no snakes, no crocodiles lurk in the waters, and fearsome predators are conspicuous by their absence? This land, blessed with an isolation that has fostered a unique evolutionary path, boasts a menagerie of creatures that would make even the most seasoned naturalist raise an eyebrow. And did you know that in this verdant paradise, the woolly sheep outnumber the human inhabitants?
Our sojourn in Aotearoa, as the Maori call New Zealand, began with the melodious symphony of native birdsong. Each morning, we were serenaded by the cheerful chirping of unseen avian artists, their vibrant plumage catching the morning light as they perched upon our deck. As we wandered through the lush Unsworth Reserve, the crystal-clear streams whispered secrets of their inhabitants – the occasional glimpse of an eel, the graceful glide of a Mallard duck.
The pastoral landscapes unfolded before us, a tapestry of rolling hills carpeted in emerald green. At Shakespear Regional Park, we encountered flocks of sheep grazing peacefully, while the vast grasslands of the journey to Paihia played host to herds of cattle. And then, a truly unforgettable spectacle: as our vessel glided through the majestic Milford Sound, a colony of seals, basking languidly on the shore, greeted us with their inquisitive gazes.
This land of enchantment, prior to the arrival of humans from the Pacific Islands and Europe, was a sanctuary for a unique cast of creatures. Land mammals, with the exception of bats, were virtually absent. However, the skies were alive with the vibrant hues of the tui, its iridescent plumage shimmering like a jewel, and the melodic calls of the kea, the mischievous alpine parrot renowned for its intelligence. The elusive kiwi, the country’s national bird, remained a tantalising whisper, its nocturnal habits making it a creature of legend.
The oceans surrounding Aotearoa teem with life, a testament to the pristine marine environment. The diminutive Hector’s dolphin, the smallest of all dolphins, playfully navigates the coastal waters, while the majestic fur seals and the endearing little blue penguins add to the marine spectacle.
New Zealand is not merely a land of breathtaking scenery; it is a treasure trove of unique wildlife. To truly experience this extraordinary land, one must venture beyond the well-trodden paths and embark on a quest to encounter these remarkable creatures. The national parks, forests, and reserves offer unparalleled opportunities for wildlife viewing.
For the discerning traveller, a journey to Kaikoura promises encounters with dolphins, whales, and seals, while the Marlborough Sounds provide a haven for birdwatching enthusiasts. So, come, immerse yourself in the magic of Aotearoa, and discover a world of wonders that awaits your exploration.
