☆ Travelogue – New Zealand: Journey Through Middle-earth: A Two-Week New Zealand Itinerary: # 5 ☆ Mr. Jagat Singh Bisht ☆

As my time in New Zealand drew to a close, I found myself captivated by The Lord of the Rings—an epic masterpiece widely regarded as one of the greatest film series ever made. Shot entirely amidst the breathtaking landscapes of director Peter Jackson’s homeland, New Zealand, the trilogy transported me to a realm of awe-inspiring beauty and timeless adventure.

Let us embark on a journey through New Zealand that mirrors the epic landscapes of Middle-earth, following the footsteps of the fellowship in The Lord of the Rings. This two-week itinerary takes you through breathtaking filming locations, immersing you in the spirit of the trilogy while sampling the country’s rich culture, cuisine, and adventure.

Day 1-2: Auckland and Matamata (Hobbiton)

Begin in Auckland, the City of Sails, where you can explore its harbour and vibrant culinary scene. From there, travel to Matamata to visit the Hobbiton Movie Set, where the charming Shire comes to life. Wander the lush hills and enjoy a feast at the Green Dragon Inn.

Day 3-4: Tongariro National Park (Mount Doom)

Venture south to Tongariro National Park, home to the volcanic landscapes of Mount Doom (Mount Ngauruhoe). Embark on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a stunning trek through dramatic scenery featured in Mordor. Relax in nearby Taupō with hot springs and lakeside views.

Day 5-6: Wellington (Rivendell)

Arrive in the nation’s capital, Wellington, where Weta Workshop offers a behind-the-scenes look at the trilogy’s creation. Discover Rivendell’s enchanting setting in Kaitoke Regional Park. Don’t miss Te Papa Museum to learn about New Zealand’s heritage.

Day 7-8: Nelson and Marlborough (Chetwood Forest)

Fly to Nelson on the South Island, gateway to Abel Tasman National Park. Visit the Chetwood Forest filming site and enjoy wine tasting in Marlborough’s vineyards, famed for their Sauvignon Blanc.

Day 9-10: West Coast and Franz Josef Glacier

Travel along the West Coast to Franz Josef Glacier, with its ethereal ice formations. Nearby, you’ll find the beacon lighting scenes filmed against spectacular alpine backdrops.

Day 11-12: Queenstown and Glenorchy (Isengard and Lothlórien)

Head to Queenstown, the adventure capital, and explore Glenorchy, where Isengard, Lothlórien, and Fangorn Forest were brought to life. Ride horseback through these iconic locations or take a jet boat on Dart River.

Day 13-14: Fiordland National Park (Fangorn Forest and Anduin River)

Conclude your journey in Fiordland, with a cruise through the majestic Milford Sound, resembling the Anduin River. Soak in the tranquility of this wilderness before returning to Queenstown.

Throughout the journey, indulge in local cuisine like pavlova, lamb, and green-lipped mussels. Stay in boutique lodges, cosy cabins, or even hobbit-themed accommodations. By road, rail, and air, you’ll traverse a landscape that feels as mythical as Tolkien’s tales themselves. Let this itinerary be your map to Middle-earth—an unforgettable adventure awaits!
