Gross National Happiness, or GNH, is a holistic and sustainable approach to development, which balances material and non-material values with the conviction that humans want to search for happiness.

The objective of GNH is to achieve a balanced development in all the facets of life that are essential; for our happiness.

History of GNH

The concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) was promulgated by the King of Bhutan in the early 1970s. When he spoke about GNH at the time, he questioned the prevailing measurement system that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) alone could deliver happiness and well-being to society. He firmly believed that happiness is an indicator, and a sign of progressive development for the Bhutanese people.

☆YOGA NIDRA by Swami Satyananda Saraswati

Video Link : YOGA NIDRA by Swami Satyananda Saraswati

Yoga Nidra is a powerful technique in which you learn to relax consciously. It is a systematic method of inducing complete physical, mental and emotional relaxation. During the practice of yoga nidra, one appears to be asleep, but the consciousness is functioning at a deeper level of awareness. Here, the state of relaxation is reached by turning inwards, away from outer experiences.
Swami Satyananda Saraswati constructed this new system called Yoga Nidra incorporating the essence of tantric scriptures and practices without having complicated ritualistic drawbacks.
Yoga nidra is a simple practice. Choose a quiet room and lie down comfortably. Listen to the instructions and follow them mentally. The most important thing in yoga nidra is to refrain from sleep.
There are several versions of yoga nidra available but this one by Swami Satyananda Saraswati is perhaps the most powerful. It is very effective. I have benefited from it greatly and received a very positive feedback from all my friends to whom I passed it on. I feel it my humble duty to make it available to anyone who may need it.
For all practitioners of yoga nidra, Swami Satyananda Saraswati’s book ‘Yoga Nidra’ will be especially useful.

SHAVASANA, ADVASANA, JYESTIKASANA, MAKARASANA, MATSYA KRIDASANA, SUPTA BADDHAKONASANA, SHASHANKASANA, BALASANA

Relaxation asanas give the body the rest it so badly needs. Constant postural abnormalities put excess strain on muscles of the back and just lying down does not relieve it.

These relaxation practices are very relaxing to the spine and related structures. They are specially recommended for any back or spinal problem.

The asanas in this group appear very easy at first, yet to do them properly is quite difficult as the tension in all the muscles of the body must be consciously released.

These postures can be adopted during any time of the day for any comfortable duration. They can be combined with relaxing activities as well.

The poses demonstrated in the video include:

SHAVASANA (corpse pose)

ADVASANA (reversed corpse pose)

JYESTIKASANA (superior posture)

MAKARASANA (crocodile pose)

MATSYA KRIDASANA (flapping fish pose)

SUPTA BADDHAKONASANA (reclining fixed angle pose)

SHASHANKASANA (pose of the moon or hare pose)

BALASANA (child’s pose)

SUKHASANA, ARDHA PADMASANA, PADMASANA, SIDDHASANA, SIDDHA YONI ASANA, SWASTIKASANA, DHYANA VEERASANA, SIMHASANA, VAJRASANA, ANANDA MADIRASANA, PADADHIRASANA, BHADRASANA
The main purpose of the meditation asanas is to allow the practitioner to sit for extended periods of time without moving and without discomfort. Only when the body has been steady and still for some time will meditation be experienced. Deep meditation requires the spinal column to be straight and very few asanas can satisfy this condition.
Furthermore, in high stages of meditation the practitioner loses control over the muscle of the body. The meditation asana, therefore, needs to hold the body in steady position without conscious effort.
In this video, we have demonstrated how to get into the following meditation asanas:
SUKHASANA (easy pose)
ARDHA PADMASANA (half lotus pose)
PADMASANA (lotus pose)
SIDDHASANA (accomplished pose for men)
SIDDHA YONI ASANA (accomplished pose for women)
SWASTIKASANA (auspicious pose)
DHYANA VEERASANA (hero’s meditation pose)
SIMHASANA (lion pose)
VAJRASANA (thunderbolt pose)
ANANDA MADIRASANA (intoxicating bliss pose)
PADADHIRASANA (breath balancing pose)
BHADRASANA (gracious pose)
Practice note: A useful suggestion to make the above poses comfortable is to be place a small cushion under the buttocks.

Yoga Nidra is a systematic method of inducing complete physical, mental and emotional relaxation. Fifteen minutes of the practice gives you the same comfort as one of sleep.

Usually the practice is done while lying down. This short version is especially designed for those who want to relax and recharge in a sitting posture at their workplace, airport or park in the quickest possible time during the course of their busy day.

Yoga nidra, in it’s present form, is a beautiful gift to humanity by Swami Satyananda Saraswati who founded the Bihar School of Yoga.

योग-साधना LifeSkills/जीवन कौशल ☆ Shinrin-Yoku : Forest Bathing ☆ Shri Jagat Singh Bisht

Shri Jagat Singh Bisht

(Master Teacher: Happiness & Well-Being, Laughter Yoga Master Trainer,  Author, Blogger, Educator and Speaker.)

☆ SHINRIN-YOKU: FOREST BATHING

HOW TREES CAN HELP YOU FIND HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

Video Link : SHINRIN-YOKU: FOREST BATHING

Spending mindful, intentional time around trees – what the Japanese call shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing – can promote health and happiness.

Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, can reduce your stress levels and blood pressure, strengthen your immune and cardiovascular systems, boost your energy, mood, creativity, and concentration, and even help you lose weight and live longer.

We all know how good being in nature can make us feel.

The sounds of the forest, the scent of the trees, the sunlight playing through the leaves, the fresh, clean air – these things give us a sense of comfort.

Being in nature can restore our mood, give us back our energy and vitality, refresh and rejuvenate us.

‘Shinrin’ in Japanese means ‘forest’ and ‘yoku’ means ‘bath’.

So shinrin-yoku means bathing in the forest atmosphere, or taking in the forest through our senses.

Shinrin-yoku is not exercise, or hiking, or jogging.

It is simply being in nature, connecting with it through our sense of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch.

We are part of the natural world. Our rhythms are the rhythms of nature.

As we walk slowly through the forest, seeing, listening, smelling, tasting and touching, we bring our rhythms into step with nature.

Shinrin-yoku is like a bridge. By opening our senses, it bridges the gap between us and the natural world.

When we are in harmony with the natural world we can begin to heal.

Our nervous system can reset itself, our bodies and minds can go back to how they ought to be.

We may not travel very far on our forest walk but, in connecting us with nature, shinrin-yoku takes us all the way home to our true selves.

Even a small amount of time in nature can have an impact on our health.

A two-hour forest bath will help you to unplug from technology and slow down.

It will bring you into the present moment and de-stress and relax you.

Shinrin-yoku can:

  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Lower stress
  • Improve cardiovascular and metabolic health
  • Lower blood sugar levels

When people started to practise shinrin-yoku, in the early 1980s, it was based only on common sense and the intuitive idea that being in the beautiful green forests of Japan would be good for us. Until recently, however, there was little scientific evidence to support what we have always known innately about the healing power of the forest.

It has been now scientifically proven that shinrin-yoku can:

  •  Boost the immune system
  •  Increase energy
  • Decrease anxiety, depression and anger
  • Reduce stress and bring about a state of relaxation
  • The World Health Organization calls stress the health epidemic of the twenty-first century. And finding ways to manage stress – not just for our own health but for the health of our communities, at home and in the workplace – is the most significant health challenge of the future.

Studies have now proved that forest bathing:

  • Lowers the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline
  • Suppresses the sympathetic or ‘fight or flight’ system
  • Enhances the parasympathetic or ‘rest and recover’ system
  • Lowers blood pressure and increases heart-rate variability Numerous studies have been conducted and a huge mass of data collected from hundreds of people on the impact of forest-bathing on various aspects of human health.
  • Forest-bathing can help you sleep
  • Forest-bathing can improve your mood
  • Forest-bathing boosts the immune system

☆ Positive Education: A Revolution in World Education

Positive education is the combination of traditional education with the study of happiness and well-being.

Video Link : Positive Education: A Revolution in World Education

Every parent wants the best for their children, they want their child to be happy and flourish.

However, finding the right education for their child can be a challenge.

Positive education emphasises the importance of training the heart as well as the mind in education.

Positive Education curriculum has been implemented with good results in schools in Australia, USA and Germany.

Be the first one to start this initiative at your school in India!

Well-being should be taught in school on three grounds:

  • As an antidote to depression
  • As a vehicle for increasing life satisfaction
  • And as an aid to better learning and more creative thinking.

“All young people need to learn workplace skills, which has been the subject matter of the education system in place for two hundred years. In addition, we can now teach the skills of well-being – of how to have more positive emotion, more meaning, better relationships, and more positive accomplishment. Schools at every level should teach these skills”.

Martin Seligman Founder, Positive Psychology “Positive Education is preparing students for the tests of life, not just a life of tests. All schools can and should be 21st century schools”.

Anthony Seldon “Positive education is based on the science of well-being and happiness.“

Positive Education is –

  • an approach to education that blends academic learning with character & well-being.
  • preparing students with life skills such as: grit, optimism, resilience, growth mindset, engagement, and mindfulness amongst others.

“Widespread support is necessary for the success of the positive education movement.“

“Positive education views school as a place where students not only cultivate their intellectual minds, but also develop a broad set of character strengths, virtues, and competencies, which together support their well-being”.

“In consultation with world experts in positive psychology, the Geelong Grammar School developed its

‘Model for Positive Education’ to complement traditional learning – an applied framework comprising six domains: Positive Relationships, Positive Emotions, Positive Health, Positive Engagement, Positive Accomplishment, and Positive Purpose.

“Positive education is a whole-school approach to student and staff well-being: it brings together the science of positive psychology with best-practice teaching, encouraging and supporting individuals and communities to flourish.”
