Satisfaction about the past, optimism about the future and happiness in the present

It is generally assumed that feelings of delight, elation, euphoria, playfulness, and cheerfulness denote happiness. But happiness could also exist in contentment, peace of mind, hopefulness, optimism, and serenity.

All of these are positive emotions and many more could be added to the list – ecstasy, glee, jubilation, merriment, joy, pleasure, laughter, exuberance, enchantment, and mirth.

Positive emotion contributes towards our happiness and well-being. Gratitude, forgiveness, savouring, mindfulness, optimism, and hope are some of the positive emotions that we can feel.

Positive emotion may be about our past, present, or future.

Past

We may feel satisfaction, contentment, fulfilment, pride, or serenity about our past.

According to Ed Diener and Robert Biswas-Diener, “Happiness does not just exist in the present but also can be drawn from past events. Try savouring past successes, enjoyable experiences and other golden memories by making a habit out of looking at memorabilia or trading stories with a spouse or friends.

“You will be surprised to find that you can draw actual happiness– right now– from events that have taken place long ago. Rather than looking for increased happiness in a better future you can mine your past experiences to pay out happiness dividends!”

Present

We may feel joy, ecstasy, calm, zest, ebullience, pleasure, or flow in the present moment.

Henri Matisse suggests, “Derive happiness in oneself from a good day’s work, from illuminating the fog that surrounds us.”

Future

Positive emotion about the future includes hope, optimism, faith, and trust.

Dalai Lama says, “Transforming the mind and cultivating a positive, altruistic, and responsible attitude are beneficial right now. Whatever problems and difficulties we may have, we can thereby face them with courage, calmness, and high spirits. Therefore, it is also the very root of happiness for many lives to come.”

Positive emotion – satisfaction about the past, optimism about the future and happiness in the present – may be enhanced with real effort.

One is truly happy is one has positive emotion about the past, present, and future but that does not happen in all cases.

Some people may be satisfied with the past, but sour in the present, and pessimistic about the future.

There can be several other combinations of positive emotion relating to the past, present or future.

Positive emotion – satisfaction about the past, optimism about the future and happiness in the present – may be enhanced with real effort.

Positive psychologists have devised happiness activities to increase positive emotion.

Captain Pravin Raghuvanshi NM—an ex Naval Officer, possesses a multifaceted personality. He served as a Senior Advisor in prestigious Supercomputer organisation C-DAC, Pune. An alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad was involved in various Artificial and High-Performance Computing projects of national and international repute. He has got a long experience in the field of ‘Natural Language Processing’, especially, in the domain of Machine Translation. He has taken the mantle of translating the timeless beauties of Indian literature upon himself so that it reaches across the globe. He has also undertaken translation work for Shri Narendra Modi, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, which was highly appreciated by him. He is also a member of ‘Bombay Film Writer Association’. He is also the English Editor for the web magazine www.e-abhivyakti.com. 

Captain Raghuvanshi is also a littérateur par excellence. He is a prolific writer, poet and ‘Shayar’ himself and participates in literature fests and ‘Mushayaras’. He keeps participating in various language & literature fests, symposiums and workshops etc.

Recently, he played an active role in the ‘International Hindi Conference’ at New Delhi. He presided over the “Session Focused on Language and Translation” and also presented a research paper. O’ soul  awaken  to absolute truth divine,

And  let the ego’s  fleeting dreams decline

In  slumber’s  realm, the world’s  loud din

Fades  to  a whisper, and  thy heart  wins

 *

The  soul’s  voice, a radiant  leading light,

Leads thee to the eternal the heavenly sight

‘That Thou Art,’ a truth to realize and see,

A reflection of the effulgent divine, in thee

 *

Resolve to seek this truth, thy heart’s desire,

And let ego’s illusions, like mist or jungle fire

In this pursuit, find liberation’s roaring clap,

“The morning mist,

the pinkish chill,

the gentle breeze,

the shivering of her milky fingers,

her transparent heart like a bubbly lamb,

the lake of intimate endearment oozing out of her eyes,

the flute notes resonating with symphony of her words,

the fathomless ocean residing in her silence,

the redness of the dawn on her glowing face,

the mysterious fatal attraction in her smile, her…”

 

“..do you remember your first love?” someone asked.

 

“…does there even exist a second, third, or fourth love?” was the resolute answer!

The poem ‘The First Love’ is a true lyrical ecstasy, a song of the soul in love, an ethereal whisper that resonates in the eternity of feeling. Each verse is an impressionist painting, where the morning mist and the gentle breeze are not mere images, but vivid sensations that transport the reader to the thrill of first love.

The choice of words, rich in musicality and depth, evokes a sublime melody that dances between the innocence and the overwhelming intensity of primordial love. The delicacy of trembling fingers, the look overflowing with tenderness and the irresistible fatality of a smile enchant like the notes of a magic flute, which seduces not only the senses, but the soul itself.
And then, the final question—a masterstroke—transforms the reflection into an eternal echo: is there any other love besides the first? The answer, loaded with unquestionable certainty, elevates the inaugural love to immortality, as if it were the very essence of existence.

Surely I may be growing older,

but I still rise with the Sun,

Mortality keeps whispering,

“Oh!  You have  just begun”

The  fire  of  the  yore  within,   

still flickers as a cinder bright,

A  desire  to  be naughty again,

A  treasured  sparking  delight

* 

Adage says, age is just a number,

Certainly not a carrier of  fate,

It’s a passion, a catalyst for sure

Making the life eternally great

* 

Curiosity, a critical key, that it’s,

Unlocks  the treasure, each  day,

A chance to laugh & gladly dance

Making merry to  seize the way

* 

Fear  of  time,  a  perennial  thief, 

that steals the fun and  delight,

I’ll  never succumb to such thefts  

And be a prisoner, of fading light

* 

Every moment is God’s unique gift,

A chance to make merry and alive

To march forward with endless joy,

to be jubilant, where hearts thrive

* 

So let the years keep accumulating

Like piles & piles of autumn leaves,

I’m  not destined be bound by time,

Be it a calamity or fleeting breeze

Be it a hailstorm or catastrophe big

Captain Pravin Raghuvanshi NM—an ex Naval Officer, possesses a multifaceted personality. He served as a Senior Advisor in prestigious Supercomputer organisation C-DAC, Pune. An alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad was involved in various Artificial and High-Performance Computing projects of national and international repute. He has got a long experience in the field of ‘Natural Language Processing’, especially, in the domain of Machine Translation. He has taken the mantle of translating the timeless beauties of Indian literature upon himself so that it reaches across the globe. He has also undertaken translation work for Shri Narendra Modi, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, which was highly appreciated by him. He is also a member of ‘Bombay Film Writer Association’. He is also the English Editor for the web magazine www.e-abhivyakti.com. 

Captain Raghuvanshi is also a littérateur par excellence. He is a prolific writer, poet and ‘Shayar’ himself and participates in literature fests and ‘Mushayaras’. He keeps participating in various language & literature fests, symposiums and workshops etc.

Recently, he played an active role in the ‘International Hindi Conference’ at New Delhi. He presided over the “Session Focused on Language and Translation” and also presented a research paper. The conference was organized by Delhi University in collaboration with New York University and Columbia University.

In his Naval career, he was qualified to command all types of warships. He is also an aviator and a Sea Diver; and recipient of various awards including ‘Nao Sena Medal’ by the President of India, Prime Minister Awards and C-in-C Commendation. He has won many national and international awards.

He is also an IIM Ahmedabad alumnus.

His latest quest involves writing various books and translation work including over 100 Bollywood songs for various international forums as a mission for the enjoyment of the global viewers. Published various books and over 3000 poems, stories, blogs and other literary work at national and international level. Felicitated by numerous literary bodies..!

हक़ीक़तें सज़ा देती हैं

आसान चीज़ों का शौक नहीं 

मुश्किलें ही मज़ा देती हैं..

I’m a prisoner of desires

Though realities do bite me

Never enjoyed easy things

Difficulties only fascinate me

था जहाँ कहना वहां

कह न पाये उम्र भर…

कागज़ों पर यूं शेर

लिखना बेज़ुबानी ही तो है…

Where it was required to speak

Couldn’t say a word entire my life

Composing poems now on paper

Is sheer dumbness only…

लोग सुनते रहे दिमाग़ की बात

हम चले दिल को रहनुमा कर के 

किस ने पाया सुकून दुनिया में 

ज़िंदगानी का सामना कर के…

People kept listening to their mind

I followed the heart as  patron

Who could ever find the solace

in the world by braving the life!

यही है ज़िन्दगी कुछ 

ख़्वाब  चन्द  उम्मीदें, 

इन्हीं खिलौनों  से तुम 

भी बहल सको तो चलो…

This only is the journey of life,

Few dreams, a handful of hopes

In the life’s turbulent waters that’s so deep,

The God’s name holds the key to keep,

A simple whisper, a divine mantra sweet,

Sets our spirits soaring, ever keen to greet

 *

Like a small raft on the vast ocean wide,

Which carries us along with the gentle tide,

To a dream where peace and love reside,

As our hearts get filled with pure joy inside

 *

The divine names are profound and strong,

Awakens our inner state where it belongs

As drilling into earth, finds springs a few

Chiseling the marble, with divine wings new

* 

May God’s name be a guiding light to share,

Love and wisdom, our hearts’ deepest care,

May we cherish this gift with pure delight

Filling our hearts with a divine love’s light..!
