☆ Satire ☆ The Advertised Heaven… ☆ Dr. Suresh Kumar Mishra ‘Uratript’ ☆

That eighty-foot-high digital hoarding put up at the city’s main intersection had robbed the public of their sleep and peace of mind for the past fortnight. The advertisement for bookings at ‘Antim Moksha Towers’ flashed on it so brilliantly that it seemed as though Chitragupta himself had launched his new startup. The builder’s smile in the advertisement was so velvety that even those neighborhood folks who lacked the money to change their bicycle tires began contemplating altering their wills. The water in the swimming pool shown in the brochure of that ‘heavenly’ society looked so blue that it could make the ocean feel ashamed of its saltiness, and the gym machines made it look as though merely exercising there would put a human being’s age into reverse gear. In government offices, clerks cast aside their files to debate whether heaven could be purchased in installments, while in reality, their salaries were admitted into the ICU by the tenth day of the month. This merchant of dreams was pasting posters of his success on every wall of the city, as if he were carving out a residential colony not in a concrete jungle, but atop the clouds, where an absolute promise of perfumed rain was made instead of pollution.

The land acquired for that project was actually the city’s old graveyard, where the kingdom of peace once reigned, but where the roar of ‘progress’ was now about to echo. The architect had displayed such jugglery in the layout that he envisioned a golf course and an international airport even within a twenty-five by fifty-foot plot, leaving the principles of physics drowning in self-reproach. The rules of RERA were buried inside the official file like a criminal thrown into a dungeon, and the face of the approving officer glowed with a divine radiance that descends only after the settlement of transactions worth millions. People were squandering their life savings for that imaginary window from which the builder had promised a ‘view of the Himalayas,’ whereas in reality, only the stench of the adjacent open drain and the neighbor’s torn undershirt were going to be visible. In that illusionary world of advertisements, morality had become a commodity that no one was willing to buy even at a clearance sale, and the middle class, crushed under the burden of their EMIs, was already turning half-dead in anticipation of that ‘ultimate salvation.’

The province’s wealthiest tycoon was personally invited to cut the ribbon at the grand inauguration ceremony of ‘Antim Moksha Towers.’ The moment he operated the golden scissors, that digital hoarding suddenly exploded. The crowd retreated in panic, but instead of smoke, thousands of genuine white pigeons emerged, transforming into black crows before everyone’s eyes and launching an attack on the entire administration. The real astonishment came when the newly constructed building lifted off its foundation like a rocket and hung suspended in mid-air, from where the builder’s voice echoed: “Full payments have been received; now the flats will be delivered in heaven itself!” The stunned crowd witnessed the entire building turn as transparent as glass, revealing inside all those officers and politicians who had partaken in this fraud, now with folded hands begging to be let down. Finally, the entire structure burst like a giant bubble, and a downpour of currency notes began from the sky. However, those notes were not real money, but the paper fragments of the ‘curses’ of those innocent souls who had been rendered homeless in the name of a home. The entire city stood frozen at this terrifying and miraculous spectacle, as those who had booked a place in heaven were now standing in a queue at the gates of hell, holding their receipts.
