His satire, ‘Shikshak Ki Mout’, went massively viral on the Sahitya Aajtak channel, garnering over a million views and reads—a monumental achievement in the history of Hindi satire. His collection of satires, ‘Ek Tinka Ikyavan Aankhen’ (A Straw and Fifty-One Eyes), is also highly acclaimed and includes his timeless work, ‘Kitabon Ki Antim Yatra’ (The Last Journey of Books). Other celebrated collections include ‘Mayaan Ek, Talwar Anek’ (One Sheath, Many Swords), ‘Gapodi Adda’ (The Gossiper’s Den), and ‘Sab Rang Mein Mere Rang’ (My Colors in Every Hue). In the quiet corridors of Apex Solutions, Room 302 was strictly reserved for bad news. When the HR department summoned Vikram at 4:50 PM on a gloomy Friday, his heart performed an unpleasant double-flip. In the corporate ecosystem, a Friday evening summons is equivalent to receiving an eviction notice from your own peace of mind.
Vikram walked in, adjusting a tie that suddenly felt two sizes too tight. Sitting across the long mahogany table was Mr. Kapoor, the HR head, whose expression was as cold and unreadable as an unhandled computer error code. On the center of the table lay a single, thick yellow envelope with Vikram’s name typed in bold black letters.
“Sit down, Vikram,” Mr. Kapoor said softly. “You know our company is restructuring. Some files need to be closed permanently.”
Vikram swallowed hard. His mind raced through his life choices: the unpaid home loan, the car EMI due next week, and his wife’s dream of buying a smart TV. He stared at the yellow envelope. Inside it lay either his severance package or his ticket to absolute ruin.
“Is there no other way, sir?” Vikram asked, his voice shaking like a leaf in an unexpected autumn storm. “I’ve given five years to this place. I worked late on weekends. I even laughed at all your bad jokes during tea breaks!”
Mr. Kapoor slowly pushed the envelope across the polished table. “Open it. Whatever is inside takes effect immediately. No arguments.”
Vikram’s fingers trembled as he touched the edge of the paper. The entire room seemed to hold its breath. The wall clock ticked with heavy, dramatic thuds. He slid his thumb under the flap, closed his eyes, and pulled out a single sheet of paper.
He opened his eyes slowly. The letter did not contain a layoff notice. Instead, it was an immediate promotion letter designating him as the new Senior Project Manager, complete with a forty percent salary hike.
Vikram froze. Relief washed over him like warm sunlight on a freezing winter morning, but confusion quickly followed. “Sir… if this is a promotion, why the secretive summons? Why the terrifying speech about closing files?”
Mr. Kapoor sighed deeply, leaned back in his chair, and finally cracked a small, weary smile. “Because, Vikram, if I called you in with a happy face, everyone outside would realize I’m giving out appraisals this quarter. This was the only way to hand you your promotion without fifteen other people storming into my office demanding a raise today.”
The entire HR team hiding behind the glass partition burst into laughter and applause. Vikram burst into a nervous chuckle, realizing that in corporate life, pure horror and pure joy often share the exact same yellow envelope.
