☆ Satire ☆ The Presidential Samosa… ☆ Dr. Suresh Kumar Mishra ‘Uratript’ ☆
The Shanti Nagar Welfare Association election was no less thrilling than a national election. This time, the contest was between two stalwarts: the long-standing president, Mr. Cooper, and the neighborhood’s newly rich builder, Mr. Bhalla. Mr. Cooper’s stake was pinned on his longstanding reputation and honesty, while Mr. Bhalla’s main weapon was the lavish ‘Royal Samosa and Jalebi Party’ hosted on the eve of the election.
A debate had been organized in the society auditorium. The entire hall was divided into two factions. On one side was an army of senior citizens chanting slogans in support of Mr. Cooper, while on the other side was a group of youngsters enamored with Mr. Bhalla’s promises of free Wi-Fi and a modern gym.
The debate reached its peak. Mr. Bhalla took the microphone and declared in a booming voice, “Brothers and sisters, if I am elected president, I will install Italian marble in the society park, and the swimming pool water will be replaced every single week!”
The crowd applauded enthusiastically. Then came Mr. Cooper’s turn. He adjusted his old spectacles and spoke in a calm, soft voice, “Italian marble and swimming pools are fine, but the lock on our main gate has been broken for the last six months, and the security guard hasn’t been paid his salary for two months. Let us address these basic problems first.”
The atmosphere suddenly turned solemn. Just then, Mr. Bhalla’s supporters began distributing packets of samosas at the back of the auditorium. The aroma of piping hot samosas wafted through the air, and everyone’s attention shifted from the speeches to the food plates. It seemed as though Mr. Bhalla’s samosa was about to overpower Mr. Cooper’s honesty.
The voting process began. Everyone slipped their paper ballot into the box. Mr. Cooper sat quietly in a corner, sipping his tea, bracing himself for an inevitable defeat. At seven in the evening, the counting of votes commenced.
When the final results were announced, even the chief guest on stage gasped in utter disbelief. Mr. Cooper had secured a staggering ninety percent of the votes, while Mr. Bhalla received a paltry ten. A shocked Mr. Bhalla leapt up and shouted, “This is unfair! When everyone ate my samosas, how on earth did you all vote for Mr. Cooper?”
Just then, Mr. Gupta, the oldest resident of the society, walked up to the stage, took the microphone, and said, “Mr. Bhalla, thank you for the delicious samosas and jalebis! But it has been a long-standing tradition in Shanti Nagar that we feast on the food of wealthy candidates, but cast our votes for the honest man who would stand at the gate at two in the morning to fix the broken lock.”
The entire auditorium erupted into roaring laughter and thunderous applause. Accepting his defeat gracefully, Mr. Bhalla embraced Mr. Cooper and said, “Mr. President, next time, the chutney will be free from my side as well!”
