☆ Satire ☆ The Appraisal Secret… ☆ Dr. Suresh Kumar Mishra ‘Uratript’ ☆
In the quiet universe of MindTree Consultancy, the annual performance appraisal was less of a corporate review and more of a high-stakes psychological drama. Employees walked into Room 404 looking like confident gladiators and emerged twenty minutes later looking like damp umbrellas left out in a monsoon downpour.
Rohan had played his cards with mathematical precision all year. He was the first to enter the office, the last to leave, and the only one who voluntarily brought homemade samosas for the manager, Mr. Deshmukh, every single Wednesday. His colleague, Nitin, on the other hand, was the king of subtle procrastination. Nitin spent half his day staring thoughtfully at empty Excel sheets and the other half giving eloquent speeches about work-life balance near the coffee machine.
When final appraisal day arrived, Rohan was supremely confident. He had calculated his key performance indicators down to the third decimal point. As he sat across from Mr. Deshmukh, the manager adjusted his glasses and looked at Rohan with profound, almost theatrical melancholy.
“Rohan,” Mr. Deshmukh sighed, tapping his pen against a thick paper folder. “Your technical output is unmatched. You work like a machine. But in today’s corporate world, being a machine isn’t enough. You lack… spiritual visibility.”
Rohan’s jaw dropped. “Spiritual visibility, sir? I worked sixty hours a week!”
“Yes,” Mr. Deshmukh nodded slowly. “Look at Nitin. Whenever upper management walks down the floor, Nitin is always standing near the whiteboard, marker in hand, looking deeply stressed and intensely reflective. That projects leadership! You, on the other hand, are always silently typing away at your desk. People think you’re just playing Solitaire.”
Rohan felt a knot tighten in his stomach. The top-tier rating and the elusive thirty percent hike felt like a dream vanishing into thin air. Mr. Deshmukh opened the folder, signed the bottom page with a flourish, and handed the letter to Rohan. “I have made my final decision. Read it outside.”
Rohan walked out with heavy steps, his heart sinking into his shoes. Nitin smirked from the coffee machine, waving his coffee cup like a victorious trophy. With trembling hands, Rohan opened the envelope in the elevator, preparing himself for disappointment.
To his utter astonishment, the letter confirmed the highest performance rating possible, accompanied by a staggering forty percent raise and a promotion to Team Lead. Attached was a small yellow sticky note in Mr. Deshmukh’s handwriting:
“Rohan, management buys performance, not whiteboard drama. I gave Nitin a five percent raise so he has plenty of free time to keep looking deeply reflective near the coffee machine. Congratulations, Team Lead.”
Rohan let out a loud laugh as the elevator doors clicked open, and the entire floor erupted into spontaneous applause for their new boss.
