?~ Wings... ~??

Long ago, you severed

the wings I carried

Fearing I might rise beyond your reach

Yet some unseen strength within me

taught me to soar high

Defying your will… by a miracle

I never understood…

Perhaps it was my quiet rebellion

Against a world that binds a woman

to four unyielding walls

I still remember a line from an

old famous Hindi film:

“Women of honour,

Do not mistake the walls of a home

for chains”

Yet, I crossed the threshold

Claiming myself at last

Feeling, deep within, a thrusting joy

As though every poem of freedom

I had ever written

Rose like dawn inside my being…

But now, in this dusk-lit hour

When illness has shadowed your body

You have not clipped my wings

Yet you have named my confinement

In the gentlest disguise; as ‘Pativrata’

–the sacred duty of a faithful wife…!

My fire has softened too

And I, too, have quietly closed

Every door of my own heart

Is this the repentance or

surrender of my womanhood…?

I knoweth not…!
